I know it isn’t Monday but…
It brings me great sadness to report that Del Martin has passed away.
For those of you who don’t know who she is…
Del Martin was an activist for gay and lesbian rights especially when it came to marriage equality.
Her death was not suprizing, seeing as she was 87… but also because she fulfilled her dreams. She married her partner, Phyllis Lyon, of 55 years on June 16, 2008.
Imagine being with someone for over half of a century and never having the chance to say I do until you’re nearly on your death bed.
Now, imagine if Del and Phyllis were unable to marry and Phyllis wasn’t allowed to be by her side at death…
Del Martin’s death is truly a devastating loss not only to the LGBT community but to society as a whole. We need people like Del and Phyllis to help vocalize the important issues.
